I Follow Accounts That Piss Me Off

In 2019 it can be challenging to want to surround yourself with things that you disagree with or things that make you uncomfortable. I know I’m not the only person who prefers to take the easier path when it comes to personal comfort levels. In one way or another, we are all creatures of comfort. On one hand, it’s comforting to be surrounded by people and ideas that resonate with you on some level, but at the same time I think choosing that same comfort over and over and over prevents long term growth.

I feel confident that, as a conscious person, I need to be kept aware of what other people believe, even when it causes a rage fire deep in my bones.

I don’t follow a ton of accounts that piss me off, but I do follow just enough to keep me on my toes.

I’m a serial “trend-follower” even though I tend to hate trends. I try to stay abreast of all the current knowledge being discussed. Whoever says staying unengaged and uninformed is cool is simply just wrong.

I follow a myriad of people and accounts that I fundamentally disagree with because I think it’s the right thing to do.

I follow accounts and news sources that discuss both sides of issues like vaccines, abortion, veganism, religious ideals, all areas of the political spectrum, and even troll accounts geared toward dismantling feminism.

I refuse to lock myself in an echochamber of people who only ever look like me, talk like me, and most importantly think like me. While it is nice to be surrounded by like-minded people most of the time, I am not fulfilled in my work by never being challenged by the ideas that others hold.

The fire in my soul is lit when I am surrounded by people who need conversations with me. I feel my life purpose is in tune with being a messenger of truth as they do not preach to the church goers and the supposed “good people” of the world. They speak their message to those ready and willing to listen, even when it goes against the grain of what is being accepted in the times that they are preaching.

I feel the same call to action deep within myself that my work is best done when I am able to connect with people who hold different ideas than my own.

I was not called forth by Spirit to affect change among people who look and think like me. No. I was called forth by the Spirit of all living beings to create change in the people who I disagree with.

And sometimes, that change happens on my end. Sometimes I am opened up to a truth that I was previously unable to see and understand. I am so open to be of service to others that I am willing to change what I know to be my core beliefs when I am presented with enough compelling information and insight from those around me.

So if you are someone who reads this blog, I ask you – are you open to the same? You do not have to have the same feeling of “life purpose” that I talked about for myself, but are you open to the ideas and opinions that are held by others unlike yourself, even if you feel that they are wrong?

In current times, we live in such a polarized world where everything has suddenly become political and a continual uphill battle of never being able to see eye to eye or respect that a variety of opinions is what births a variety of solutions for the problems we all face.

I have found myself getting tired of hearing the same old thing day in and day out when I turn to the news or any of my social media outlets for information and insight on a matter that I believe to be important. I can’t shake the feeling that the true ideas that will inevitably create the greatest change are not found on the accounts that are agreeable to us or with thousands of followers and brand deals. The best ideas often times come from the smaller ones among us, the ones who aren’t willing to sell their soul to feed you the same bullshit that every account or news organization like them is pedaling.

With that being said, I have a few future posts lined up that while they may seem to be clickbait-ish in nature, I have found to be relatively informative as a continually form my own opinions of the world rather than gleefully accept all that has been created and packaged for me by the thoughts and ideas of others. I look forward to sharing my findings and hearing back on what you have to say.
