Soma Kombucha – That’s Whats Up

Kombucha is so hot right now! It’s another one of those wellness products that seem to be everywhere you look these days.

With such an influx of companies producing Kombucha, it provides a lot of options available on the market for where you choose to spend your money.

So who really has the best booch out there?

Today, I’m going to give you the long awaited answer: The best kombucha is none other than Soma Kombucha.

Soma Kombucha

Based out of Portland, Or (for anyone keeping track yes, that’s another local small business to add to your list if you’re in the Portland Area) the philosophy behind Soma’s brand is one near and dear to my heart. Not only are they focused on wellness for the human body but they are also in tune with the fact that every product purchased also has a lifespan. That the materials and people involved are also part of the product’s creation and in order to have a really great product, it should start from some really great places.

Soma is a zero waste company run on renewable energy that also provides nutritional education to children in Africa and soon India. This company is literally my personal dream come true for what capitalism can really do to expand our impact on a global scale.

Additionally, Soma offers more probiotics filled options outside of the typical kombucha. They offer Jun – which is a probiotic drink made from green tea and organic raw wildflower honey, Rii – a probiotic which thrives in mineral rich water, and Coffee-Boocha – Coffee fermented with Kombucha cultures.

Outside of all the personal reasons I’m obsessed with the company itself, their product is simply better than the rest when it comes to the health and taste of what they’re selling.

Health Benefits

Aside from being a trendy beverage that everyone can’t seem to get enough of is the fact that Kombucha is actually a trend that has some serious health benefits for everyone who drinks it.

The main culprit behind the health of this drink is the number of probiotics available with each sip, especially with Soma.

Here’s your Quirky Quip crash course on probiotics:

Probiotics are a type of bacteria that grow in your gut. Now, I know what you might be thinking – gross, gut bacteria – but as is the case with most things in life, there are good and bad bacteria that happily reside in your gut no matter what you do and eat. The hope is that in a healthy, properly functioning gut your ratio of good:bad is leaning more toward the good side. According to Dr. David Friedman, “the balance of gut flora should be approximately 85 percent good bacteria and 15 percent bad bacteria. When this ratio gets off balance and there’s too much of a certain type of fungus, yeast or bacteria, it can lead to disharmony and disease. The word probiotic broken down actually means “promoting life.”  Indeed, our life is dependent on these little bugs.”

Probiotics exist in a variety of foods and can be easily added to your diet, given that you are not picky or have any dietary restrictions. Things like sauerkraut, yogurt, kefir, apple cider vinegar, cultured vegetables, and kombucha all contain probiotics. For me, kombucha is the easiest and tastiest way to add probiotics to my diet, without taking the route of probiotic supplements outright. Which, for anyone wondering, is a fine option for adding probiotics to your diet.

Most importantly, in my perspective, is that probiotics have been shown to not only improve digestion but also help to regulate mood and have other brain boosting benefits. Many medical professionals are now comfortable admitting that the gut is the “second brain”. Many neurotransmitters in our brain actually start in our gut. So for people with imbalanced neurotransmitters, like me, focusing on your gut health is a great way to help your body work through those brain chemical challenges by making a few tweaks to your diet.

Taste

Now on to the important part – Soma’s kombuchas are literally the best kombuchas on the market.

So let me be completely honest for a moment and tell the truth – I didn’t actually used to enjoy kombucha. Like at all. I had read about the health benefits of kombucha and convinced myself that I’m a “big kid” and can deal with the overpowering vinegar smell and taste of other kombucha brands because I knew I was doing something that would benefit my body. I really genuinely just didn’t like it though. That is, until I came across Soma at my community Farmer’s Market.

Soma is a unique company in a multitude of ways, but arguably the coolest thing about Soma is their taprooms and mini-taprooms that can be found across the Portland/Vancouver area. You read that right – Soma has a small collection of taps spread out across the city where you can sample the flavors you’re considering purchasing and decide which one is right for you. Anyone else with an indecisive partner like myself will have a deep appreciation for this feature just as I did.

Soma’s flavors are all unique, one’s that I’ve personally not seen from other kombucha flavors. They don’t smell of vinegar the moment you open the top and have refreshing flavors that are soul satisfying. On a sweetness scale, I find these to be the perfect level of a little sweet without leaving a lasting sweetness in your mouth. Maybe that’s thanks to the fermentation process Soma uses which allows a natural fructose to sweeten the beverage, but without the blood sugar spike you find in the white sugar-filled alternatives.

My favorite flavors include: Pear fennel, Strawberry + CBD, Oak Cask Kombucha Jun Rii, Old Growth Red Cedar + CBD, and their wellness waters, among others. It’s honestly hard to narrow it down, all of their flavors are amazing! Plus, my readers know how much I love anything involved with CBD.

If you’re someone feeling the call to switch to a new brand of Kombucha, Soma is the logical next step. For anyone in the Portland area, try checking them out at whichever taphouse is closest to you or at a Farmer’s Market near you – there’s plenty to choose from! If you’re not local to the Portland area, Soma can be purchased in a variety of stores. Use this link to search for a store nearest you!
