Now Trending: Spiritual Scam Artists

There’s a new type of influencer out and about these days – The Spiritual Influencer

As a spiritual enthusiast myself, I became excited to learn that spirituality was having a moment. Any press on something deep and meaningful is good press, right?
Oh, how I have been shown the darkness that resides here.
I’ll preface my rant by saying that no, not all people out there are scam artists. There are some legit people with legit gifts offering services that will ultimately provide benefit to you and your life, should you choose to pursue them. I know this because I’ve purchased them and have grown immensely from the insight and clarity that was provided to me through these people.

HOWEVER, from my observations, they are few and far between. Not everyone who promotes themselves as “intuitive life coaches” is exactly that, or even close. And not everyone who offers some “Become Your Best Inner Goddess” workshop is actually an expert in the field. Not that they need to be, by any means. The results are found in your personal experience with their services.

BUT – not every person with a perfectly curated Instagram offering thousand dollar workshops is worth the investment. I might venture to say most of them aren’t. But hey, that’s me.

The underlying issue to this whole thing isn’t necessarily the scam artists themselves, unfortunately. The issue is that in these current days there is an overabundance of people who are seekers looking for answers and they’re confused.

I know because I’ve been there. I’m still there. I’m a perpetual truth-seeker, so I get it. There is a deep-seated desire within us all to look for answers for modern-day ailments and issues we face. We are frustrated with life, unsure if we are on the right path, yearning for more meaning and connectedness in our daily lives.

Or, even worse, we go through a spiritual awakening and find ourselves isolated and alone with no one to turn to. Spiritual awakenings can be brutal, they are a rebirth of sorts and often you have been flung from your comfort zone so hard and so fast that you have no idea where to turn or whom to look toward for answers. So you begin your search. And in walk the spiritual influencers of today.

The people who really seem like they get it. They use all the right words, share things that really resonate with how you’re struggling, and it seems like they’ve just got it all figured out. I get it. I’ve been there.

But here’s the thing – most of these people have identified you as their “ideal client” for whatever it is they want to sell you. They know exactly what it is that you are searching for, and they are ready to suck you dry in your quest for meaning and belonging. Almost like organized religion and their churches that require a certain amount of income to be given to God, specifically through them.

*Cue my religiously judgmental eye roll*

It can be hard to decipher the differences, especially when it seems like these people really know what to do and how to answer the millions of questions you have racing through your mind because hey, no one else in your sphere seems to get where you’re coming from, right?

Don’t buy into it. Don’t believe those lies that are being sold to you that someone else holds any more power to figuring out your life and your path than you. You are your own guru. You may have guides in life who help teach you and show you how to decipher the messages of truth from the lies, but ultimately you are the one who needs to truly pursue and find your truth. No person out there slinging tarot cards, or giving intuitive advice, or even studying the Holy Bible is going to have a better idea about your life than you.

Will they be able to help you on your journey? Absolutely.

But my dear spiritual seeker, don’t allow someone outside yourself to convince you that you are powerless to find your way. Don’t let them take your money, your valuable resources, in exchange for a truth that no one else can teach you but yourself. Take their advice, heed their counsel, but know that ultimately you are the most powerful player in your life and you will ultimately create your way. The power is yours, take it back from wherever you left it and let it guide you toward your truth.

In my next post, I will share some ways to spot a scam artist from a mile away that I have learned as I watch from the spiritual sidelines.
